Hailing from the Sta. Rita Hills AVA and owned and managed by the superstar winemaker Dave Phinney the latest release of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
So, Dave Phinney isn't a stranger to us - we've loved all his wines from Orin Swift and his Pinot specialist label l'Usine, where all his wines were made with grapes from contracted farmers or from fruit bought on the open market. He has now plunged into the next step and bought his own vineyard.
Our Lady of Guadalope has been planned entirely so that Dave can make the wine from the root up. He fell in love with this abandoned row crop farm on the western edge of the AVA in 2015 and quickly set about soil, wind and rain mapping, then planting with nine different clones to suit each microclimate to perfection.
The result is astounding. The wine opens with ripe red fruit—raspberry, cherry, a touch of wild strawberry—layered with lifted floral notes, subtle spice, and a delicate trace of underbrush. Ageing in French oak has lent texture and polish, but it’s the clarity and poise of the fruit that carries the wine through a long, mineral-tinged finish.
